Oleh – Police in Delta State have arrested two suspected armed robbers for their alleged involvement in the attack of the owner of a petrol and gas station at Irri Community, Isoko South Local Government Area of the state.
The early morning serenity in the Irri Community was shattered on Monday as armed robbers numbering about five stormed the area, shooting at random for almost two hours.
In a swift reaction, the Police who responded to a distressed call swung into action, trailed the robbers to their hideout and arrested two of them while the other three fled.
A source who witnessed the robbery incident, said the bandits struck immediately power was cut off from the area at about 2.53 a.m.
The source, who craved anonymity, said: “The incident came as a shock because power supply was cut off barely two minutes when the shooting started.
We initially thought it was vigilante group but the sporadic shooting was like a war going on. They went to the Chief’s (the owner of the petrol station) house and were shooting indiscriminately and barking orders that they should open the gate.
“The chief escaped through the fence before they broke through his tenant’s abode to gain access. The tenant, a lawyer, was hit on the head with a gun, collected his phones, money and wife’s jewelry box before making for the next compound.
“After robbing the next compound they went round the whole area shooting indiscriminately without any opposition till almost 5am before they left.”
INDEPENDENT gathered that the chief sustained serious injuries in his escape bid and was alone when the incident occurred.
It was gathered that members of the community’s vigilante team who later came after the robbery incident, found about 16 bullets that the bandits left behind.
Contacted, Mr. Andrew Aniamaka, Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, confirmed the incident, saying two of the suspected armed robbers confessed to the attack after they were arrested by the police officers from the Oleh divisional headquarters in collaboration with the vigilante.
Saying that two cut to size guns were recovered from the hoodlums, he said the police were on the tail of the others.
