The Anambra State House of Assembly has issued a unanimous resolution calling on Chief Willie Obiano, the state governor, to urgently intervene and rehabilitate the failed portions of Afor Nkpor – Eke Nkpor Road with a spur at Nkpor Technical Collage in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, which is hardly passable currently.
Making the call at House plenary on Tuesday, the legislators noted that the road which failed badly at the Ogbe-Etiti-Oseloka-Umusiome portion is a strategic by-pass that for many years helped to decongest traffic jam at Nkpor-Junction as travelers from Enugu axis heading to Nkpor-Uno, Umuoji, Ojoto, Ideani and Nnobi areas of Anambra State use it to beat the traffic congestion at Nkpor Junction; adding that the road also leads to Nkpor Technical College, which is one of the best equipped technical schools east of the Niger.
Hon. Nkoli Mmegbuaneze, member representing Idemili North Constituency in the state House of Assembly, had reported to the House in a motion of urgent public importance that the said road failure resulted in acute flooding and erosion that had sacked hundreds of families from their ancestral homes, and swallowed houses causing untold hardship to hitherto happy inhabitants of the area.
She urged her colleagues to join force with her in urging the governor to direct the Ministry of Road Construction, Road Maintenance and Furniture, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Beautification and Ecology, to take appropriate action to address the present hardship being faced by inhabitants of the area as well as road users.
While speaking to newsmen after the plenary, Hon. Mmegbuaneze said that the repair of the failed portions of the said road as well as checking the flood and resultant erosion became germane in her agenda because the people of her constituency deserved the best.
“My late husband did his best to give adequate and people-oriented representation to the good people of Idemili North Constituency. Having found myself here, and having got the mandate of my people to replace my husband, I will do everything within my power as a legislator to toe the steps of my husband and give Idemili people adequate representation.
“The purpose of democracy is for a people to have a representative, who will speak on their behalf. This is what I am doing; and I have no doubt in my mind that Governor Willie Obiano, as he will always do, will listen to this call and fix the failed portion of the road,” she said.
